Brighton and Hove AC athletes delivered some excellent results at the England Athletics age group Championships in Bedford last weekend.
Tani Sonoiki only started athletics last year. Focussing on Triple Jump, the Pat Apantaku coached athlete leapt out to 11.67m – a 69-centimetre personal best – in the under 17 women’s competition to claim the bronze medal. The distance was just one centimetre off silver and eight centimetres behind Kelsey Sutherland’s U17W club record.
Meanwhile, in the same age group, there was a superb silver medal for Dulcie Yelling in the javelin, with a 2.5 metre personal best of 47.99m. Dulcie beat her previous PB of 45.59m in four out of her six throws. It was the culmination of a fabulous season in which she won English Schools and Schools International (SIAB) titles.
There were several other promising results for club members. Saul Bennett ran a 3.5 second PB of 4:28.41 in the under 15 boys 1500m for seventh place. Jaiten Best and Layla Bowen were 7th and 10th respectively in the under 15 girls Triple Jump with leaps of 9.90m and 9.67m.
Julieanna Walsh ran 4:57 in her heat of the U15G 1500m, and English Schools medallist Stella Kalman had a below-par performance in the U15G Long Jump with a 12th place finish.
