JUNIORS

Head Coach Richard Carter

Assistant Coach Sean Dunford

Training 6pm – 7pm Tuesdays and Thursdays

Young athletes are strongly encouraged to focus on multi sports and multi events in the early stages of their development.

Richard and Sean run an extremely successful youth section and is the pathway for moving in to more specialised events.

It is a requirement that if you join the club then you are expected to compete if selected. League matches take place from late spring to late summer on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays (note, not every weekend!) These take place in Sussex and the South East. There are also Open meetings which athletes are encouraged to enter. Coaches will provide more information.

Spaces are limited so it is now a requirement that all young athletes have a few sessions at Withdean Athletics Academy so they get used to the format of training nights. When a space is available for club nights they will be invited to join.

U13s (Year 6 & 7)

U13s is where athletes start to show a preference for an event. Our coaches run their training sessions at different times and we don’t have space in all of the different disciplines. Check out the individual pages for more information.

Richard is the lead coach for Withdean Athletics Academy. These are children’s athletics sessions which take place:

  • Monday and Friday evenings at 5pm (Y4 – Y7)
  • Saturdays – Minis – 4-7 years olds 08:45 – 09:30
  • Saturdays – Juniors – 8-11 year olds 09:30 – 10:30

These sessions involve running, jumping and throwing and are run in a similar format to club nights.

You can pay at Withdean Reception on the day although booking in advance is advisable:

Look for QuadKids (Monday and Friday), Academy (Saturday)

Many of these athletes may then have a ‘preferred’ status for joining the Club group when spaces are available as Richard already knows them (and they know him and what is expected).

Please note – these sessions are run by Freedom Leisure and not Brighton and Hove AC. If you need any further information please do not contact the club as we cannot help you. Please contact Withdean Reception.

If your child is in school years from Reception to Year 4, unfortunately, they cannot join the club (until they are 9 years old).

Richard also attends the local junior parkrun events. These are a great way to get extra training /racing experience and meet many of the other athletes.
