Brighton and Hove AC legend, John Lees turned 80 this month, and club President Melanie Anning visited him to send our best wishes.
John’s athletics achievements included. race walking 100 miles in 18:15.34 in 1972, a 2,891 mile trek across America in 53 days, 12 hours and 15 mins, a world record that still stands out. He won silver in the 50km British Championships and remains the only Brighton resident to have won the iconic London to Brighton Race in 1977.
John worked as a BBC sports reporter up until his retirement in 2017 and was known as the “the gentleman of sport”.
