Only four Brighton & Hove athletes travelled to Sutton for the Sussex and Surrey Combined Events Championships last weekend but between them they brought back two gold medals, a silver and a bronze.
Senior Becky Owen was the stand out athlete with a near 1000 point victory in the Heptathlon. She recorded a season’s best with the following marks: 100mH – 17.35s, Long Jump – 4.90m, 200m – 28.85s, High Jump -1.51m, Shot – 9.56m. Javelin – 33.58m and a final 800m of 2:30.68. Becky has suffered from health problems this year after a freak accident at work led to a loss of eyesight, so her performance is all the more remarkable.
Meanwhile in the under 15 boys competition Alexander Riley and Fionn O’Murchu were second and third respectively with 1626 and 1546 points. Alexander achieved the following for the silver medal; 80mH – 15.85s, LJ – 4.10m, HJ-1.37m, SP – 7.82m and 800m 2:23.47. Meanwhile Fionn’s bronze medal performance included; 80mH – 16.78s, HJ – 1.34, LJ – 4.11m, SP- 8.38m and a 2.25.41 800m.
Under 13 Dulcie Yelling went one better than last year’s silver, to top the podium, achieving three personal bests en route with 70mH in 13.43s, LJ – 4.06m, HJ – 1.29m, SP – 7.76m and a 2:30.47 800m.
