Four championship-best performances and an array of PBs marked the Sussex Under 13 Track and Field with Under 11 Quadkids Champs at the weekend.
The first record to fall at the event held at the K2, Crawley, was in the under 13 girls’ 1500m where HY’s Isabella Buchanan ran clocked a sparkling time of 04.42.72 – not only breaking the previous record of 5.03.31 but also shooting herself to second in the UK rankings.
Next was Louis Ashworth (Brighton & Hove AC) who cleared the previous Under 13 boys’ long jump record by 12cm leaping to 5.03m. It was a great day all round for Louis who also won 150m gold and 800m silver.
Crawley’s Archie Oates was the third record breaker in the discus with a throw of 33.44. Archie also took top spot in the shot put.
Last year’s Quad Kids champion, Amelia Dorrington, was back competing for her second year in the age group and she didn’t disappoint. With impressive performances in all four of the disciplines (600m, 75m, standing long jump and howler) the young Brighton & Hove athlete scored a total of 262 points across the day, 21 ahead of the previous championship record.
Over in the boys’ Quad Kids, Zachary Soan (Eastbourne) was the winner.
Others were also in fabulous winning forms through the day with some collecting a hat trick of gold medals.
These included Eastbourne sprinter Kristi Prifti, who not only took gold in the 75m (10.26) and 150m (20.44) but also in the 70mh (12.21 in the final and 11.93 in the heat).
Seren Rowe (Brighton & Hove AC) was another on form winning the 800m (2.27.85, the long jump (4.49) and the discus (19.55).
The next major event for the Under 13s will be the South East Inter Counties taking place in Surrey at the end of July. Selections for this are currently being made and successful athletes will be notified in the coming days.
