The British Indoor Championships took place over two days last weekend and we had three of our athletes competing. Amber Anning scooped gold in the women’s 400m (51.40), an amazing run considering cancellations to her flight from the USA meant she was suffering from jetlag. Amber will now be competing in the European Indoor Champs 6-9th March. Alex Riley at just 19 came 6th in the 1500m final in a PB of 3.41.70 and Tomer Tarragano was 9th in the 3K final in 7.40.16.
Also taking place at the weekend was a very muddy National Cross Country Championship at Parliament Hill. The third race of the day saw under 13 starlet Skye Widdows run a determined 13.13mins to scoop the silver medal, and she’s still in the first year of this age group! There were many strong runs from our athletes in challenging conditions, including Ciara Muzio who was 14th senior woman in 32.01mons, Ava James, 21st U17 women, Taylor Thom Watts, 23rd U15 boys.
The England Indoor Age Group Champs took place in Sheffield on 8-9 Feb. Congratulations to Jessica Bliss competed in the 60mH and came fourth in her heat with a time of 8.73seconds only 0.04 off her PB (of 8.69seconds set at the English Indoor Champs in Sheffield two weeks earlier where she won Silver in the U20 age group. Also competing was Jaiten Best, who set a U17 Club record of 11.76m in the Triple Jump, earning Bronze.
Also, taking part in the Age Group Champs and one of the 21 vaulters from Sussex at the event was Florence Matten, who finished fifth in the U15 pole vault. She trains with Lewes AC’s pole vault section, along with other members of Brighton & Hove AC. It was a successful championships for the 21 Sussex vaulters taking part across the age-groups, with two golds, a silver and six more top-5 places. Lewes AC is keen for more athletes to give pole vaulting a go. It runs taster sessions for 11 to 13-year-olds throughout the year. Email david.tutton@icloud.com to find out more.
