About Brighton & Hove City Athletics Club

April 16, 2008

Background

Brighton and Hove Athletic Club is the oldest and largest athletic club in the area, it has developed from a harriers club, which was founded over 100 years ago.

We provide coaching and competition for Track and Field, Cross Country, Road Running and Marathon.

The club trains at Withdean Sports Complex in Brighton (see map), details of training groups and times can be found on our training page.

We are affiliated to both the Sussex County AAA and South of England AA and compete in county, regional and national leagues and competitions.

High Standard

Here at Brighton and Hove Athletic Club, we pride ourselves on providing a high standard of coaching and competition for all our athletes – regardless of their ability and tailored to their individual requirements.

Our successes are numerous. Our Marathon teams are frequently in the first three in the London Marathon. In recent years several of our members have represented Great Britain in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor track and field, veteran and walking events. Our teams regularly win County and Regional titles and we have produced more County Champions than any other Sussex Club.

Amongst its alumni International Honours have been gained by Steve Ovett, Chris Carter, Mike Winch, Andy Bristow, Sue Morley, Sonia McGeorge, Nigel Gates and several others including many juniors. See our hall of fame, for details.

Races

The club organises several races each year, including the prestigious annual Brighton 10k Road Race, in the past this has been the AAA of England Championship and the South of England Championship. It is usually the Sussex 10k Championships race.

Social

The club house provides the central meeting area for members before and after training. Here they can warm up before their session, and afterwards enjoy snacks and hot beverages from the tuck shop. It is also a good place for parents to meet on cold or wet training evenings!

Information about coaching, forthcoming events and race results can all be found on the club notice boards.

Club Awards

Club Awards are presented twice each year, here athletes are recognised for their individual successes and team input during the summer and winter seasons. The summer presentation evening is usually followed by a Barbeque.

Other Events

Each year the Boxing Day Races provide a great morning out for those recovering from Christmas! This fun run takes place around the nearby Preston Park where entrants, many in fancy dress, complete up to 4 laps.
