Sussex Under-13 Champs Review

July 16, 2019

Not only were there medals galore for Brighton athletes at the under-13 County championships but Championship Best Performances (CBP) fell and two club records were broken.

The day started at 11AM where the 100m heats saw six Brighton athletes through to the finals and Libby take a silver medal in the discus. Next on the timetable came the 1500m races and boys high jump and for Brighton four more medals and a CBP. Dulcie took gold and her own CBP finishing in 5:05. Tom in his first year and Jude finished with silver and bronze medals in amazing times of 4:51.47 and 4:52.99 respectively. Max jumped 1.37m, just shy of his PB, to take high jump gold.

Next to come were the hurdles races, Max and Rhys qualified for the final and in the girls straight final Frankie bagged herself a silver and a club record in 11.81s. As we approached lunchtime a club record, gold medal and CBP fell to Ruby in the 100m final with a stunning 13.26s. 13.26 was also the time Noah ran to gain the silver medal in the boys’ final.

As the halfway point arrived, the medals kept coming. Noah gained his second medal of the day, taking long jump bronze with a leap of 4.47m and Dulcie and Masha gained shot put silver and bronze with 7.67m and 7.52m respectively.

The girls high jump and boys 75m hurdles finals saw another two medals and for both it was their second of the day. Libby jumped a fine PB of 1.35m and Max ran a PB of 13.09s both gaining bronze medals.

The 200m finals were next with an amazing eight club athletes in the finals. There were silvers for Ruby and Noah in 27.65s and 27.79s and Frankie came home with a bronze in 28.77s behind Ruby.

Back to the final field events long jump girls and both javelin competitions. Another five medals. Silver and bronze both with PBs for Frankie and Stella jumping 4:59m and 4:37m. Frankie collecting her third individual medal of the day.

Also collecting her third individual medal of the day was Dulcie in the javelin, another gold and a second CBP, beating last year’s performance by over three metres with 37.97m. Louis and Theo battled it out for silver and bronze, Louis getting the silver, throwing 35.99m and 35.82m respectively.

The final individual races on the track were the 800m races. Two more races and two more medals. Ruben and Pearl both won their timed heats and gained the bronze medal overall with times of 2:26.34 & 2:32.5.

As the successful day came to a close it was only fitting that our relay teams finished on medals. Having trained and raced together all season, both batons made it round smoothly with Frankie, Elodie, Libby and Stella gaining silver and Max, Rhys, Louis and Noah bringing the competition to a close with a bronze medal.

Well done to all of our young athletes who took part.
