Brighton’s Peter Moreno won the Nigerian National Decathlon title despite a near catastrophe with the pole vault. Competing in the championships at Warri, Moreno, won the title by some three hundred points. Moreno already holds the Nigerian pole vault record at 4.60m, which he cleared earlier in the season but due to a lack of longer poles at the event, he struggled after clearing 3.00m and could not go any higher.
Moreno clocked 11.02s in the 100m, 7.34m long jump, 11.65m shot, 1.90m high jump and 48.21s for the 400m and this saw him right on schedule to deprive Sebastian Rodger of his County record.
Moreno started well on Day two clocking 14.88s for the hurdles, throwing the discus 30.58m but the pole vault threw him well off course. He pulled out a 46.56m javelin throw and clocked 5:03.27s for the 1500 to total 6712 points, some two hundred points shy of his personal best.
