More Medals for the Brighton youngsters at the Sussex Road Relays

April 11, 2017

On a sunny and windy afternoon a record 39 Brighton youngsters in 13 teams finished the final winter fixture in fine style with team and individual success in the Sussex Road Relays at Christ Hospital School. Relay batons and chip timing was used for the first time. As predicted picking the teams was not easy and so it turned out and with many improving their times (in brackets) from last year by some way, which shows the club is going in the right direction.

In the first relay the U/13 girls of Lacey Fowler 6.41 (6.52) Rebecca Losh 6.27 (6.53) whose time was the 3rd fastest lap and Tatum Walker 6.38 (6.59) were beaten into second place by team Bodyworks who had Inter-Counties Champion Beth Cook in their team. Showing our depth this year in the age group the B team of Eadie Yelling 6.43 (7.10) Ciara Muzio running her first race for the club 6.40 and with Ella Matthews chasing the A team in 6.35 (7.02) claimed the bronze medal. There were 3 other teams in the u/13 where Ciara’s twin sister Emily Muzio 6.51 Jess Corbett 6.59 and Ruby Wilson 6.59 placed 7th for the C team. Dulcie Yelling 6.49 Rosie Gasson 7.01 and Olivia Weston 8.02 placed 10th for the E team and the D team of Bertie Brooking 7.07 Sima Saadatzadeh 7.14 and Allanah Clayton 7.41 were placed 13th out of the 20 teams.

In the U/15 girls relay all six girls came home with a medal with the A team of Alex Nann 6.29 Lois Dooley 6.25 and Niamh Halloren 6.22 (6.33) making a welcome return to the team came from second to first to win the race by 16 seconds and Niamh was the third fastest lap of the day. The B team of Amber Wright 6.32 (6.39) Astrid Blackledge 7.01 (7.20) and Gracie Bernard 6.34 (6.46) coming from 4th to 3rd to win the Bronze medals.

In the U/15 boys race the team of Henry Taylor 5.52 Patrick Connolly 6.03 (6.17) and Max Brazier 5.40 (5.57) who stormed home from 5th to 3rd on the last leg to claim the bronze medals. Well done also to Baxter Fletcher 6.02 who ran in an incomplete B team.

In the u/13 boys relay due to a wrong baton change on the last leg the teams were just outside the medals. The A team of Henry Yelling 6.26 (6.51) Will Matthews 6.18 (6.32) and Haiden May 6.26 placed 4th just six seconds behind the 3rd team. Not far behind the B team of Archie Rowles 6.11 (6.53) Kofi Obeng 6.41 and Josh Pay 6.18 the team was 5th. The C team of Rudy Jones 6.25 George Taylor 6.19 (6.55) and Oscar Davies 6.40 (6.49) was in 8th and the D team of William Muzio 6.54 Ethan Booth 6.50 and Kit Monti came 17th out of the 26 teams.

Running in the senior womens team that came 4th Olivia Lyon-Monk was the 2nd fastest u/17 women and her Dad David was in the O/50 team that gained 3rd team.

In the O/60 relay Peter Witcomb Tom Ulliott and John Lowden won the gold medal by nearly two minutes and improved the course record. In doing so John Lowden took Peter’s individual course record by just one second, however Peter was pleased to see his O/50 course record which he set 17 years ago is still intact.

Well done again the every one and thanks for your continued support and hope you all enjoy the summer on and off the track.
