Indoor Success for B&H Athletes

February 22, 2016

It was a smashing weekend for the Sussex girls at the County Indoor championships at Sutton over the weekend. The girls/women amassed a total of ten Championship Best Performances while Brighton & Hove’s Matt Hewitt was the only male record breaker clocking 8.38 in the senior 60m hurdles while in the senior women’s events there was one CBP with Becky Owen (Brighton & Hove) putting the shot 11.01m for a record and she also won both the 60m hurdles in 9.41 and cleared 1.50m in the high jump.

Pride of place must go to the very much in form Amber Anning who actually set three CBPs in the U17 age group winning the 60m sprint in 7.80m, which was faster than both the senior and U20 winners. She leapt 5.31m to win the long jump and set a National School’s standard of 11.18m for victory in the triple jump. Anning also finished second in the shot putt.

It was not only the record breakers who turned in highly promising performances,Matt Smith did the double in the U20s taking the 60m hurdles in 9.14 and the triple jump with 12.05m as well as heaving the shot 10.25m for a silver medal and taking silver in the high jump and long jump also.

An even better long jump performance came in the senior men’s event where Tom French (Brighton & Hove) only gained the extra three jumps by jumping less than 5.00m after two no jumps. He did however make amends by taking the title with 7.05m.

Jamie Lambert (Brighton & Hove) showed some fine hurdling in the U17 age group winning with a nippy PB of 8.78, while club mate Ruby Anning, showing every intention of emulating her sister took second place in the U13 long jump with 4.07m but proved a convincing 60m winner in 8.7 having clocked 8.63m in her heat.
