Sussex Sportshall League – Horsham – Match 1, Sunday 17th November
Brighton and Hove’s younger athletes were out in force last Sunday at the first Sportshall league match of the 2013-14 season. Some strong performances, particularly from our U13 girls, could not prevent Crawley taking the girls match by just 5½ points. The boys finished in 3rd place in their separate competition behind winners Horsham and second placed Crawley.There were several memorable performances: Flo Robinson and Bethany Smith in the U13 8-lap Parlauf and Noah Rees in the U13 Shot and 4-lap sprint. Noah and Joseph Routledge had arrived straight from a rugby match – covered up to their knees in mud and barely had time to pin on numbers before they had to compete. Both scored valuable points for the team. Matt Smith won the U15 shot by more than two clear metres and Amber Anning improved her own U13 4-lap sprint record by more than half a second before breaking the Standing Long Jump record with a leap of 2.42m.
It was exciting to see the future of the club with some promising performances from 9 and 10 year old athletes, many of whom were competing in Sportshall for the first time. However if we are to beat Crawley and Horsham this season we need the strongest possible team across all of the age groups at the next three matches. Sadly the red and black hooped vest was glaringly absent from some of the U15 and U13 boys events.
Sportshall athletics has been a launchpad for some of the UK’s greatest athletes including Olympic gold medal heptathlete Denise Lewis, London Olympics bronze medal high jumper Robbie Grabarz and sprinters Mark Lewis Francis and Kelly Sotherton.
