Sussex League Success for Brighton Youngsters in First fixture of the Season

The first Sussex league race was held next to Goodwood racecourse on a pleasant mild afternoon and in all the younger age groups there were record fields. Despite illness and holidays the Brighton youngsters had another successful afternoon with many fine performances.

The day started with the U/11 girls race where Dulcie Yelling was a runaway winner and in her first race Edith Hancock was second. In the u/11 boys race Tom Matthews was just run out of first place and Archie Turner who led early on was just behind in 3rd place. Joe Hall was 7th and Freddie Matthews was 13th both had good first runs.

In the U/13 girls race Eadie Yelling was fourth just eight seconds behind the first athlete with Ruby Wilson 12th and Mollie Barrett 13th the team finished in 2nd place. Just behind was Rosie Gasson who only recently turned 11 in 14th and with Sima Saadatzadeh 19th, Tilly Wilburn 20th the team came 5th and were the first B team. Sophie Packham led the C team home in 24th and with Maddie Badruzaman in her first race for the club 26th Allanah Clayton 30th the C team came 9th.an his twin sister finishing an excellent 3rd place. The team was completed by Miles Waterworth in 16th and Will Matthews who did very well after a nasty fall in 18th and the team finished in 5th place just seven points behind the 3rd team. In a record field of 75 runners Ethan Booth came 25th Cosmo Derangi 43rd Kit Monti 54th.

U/15 Lois Dooley had another fine run in 5th place and with Tatum Walker 7th, Ella Matthews 10th they won the team race by three points. To show our depth in this age group we had six girls in the first 14 with the B team of Jess Corbet 11th, Alex Nann 13th and Poppy Palmer-Malins 14th the team finished just seven points behind the 3rd team in 5th place and with others to come into the team we are looking good for the team title. We also had Lacey Fowler not far behind in 17th, Edie Seth 41st and Bertie Brooking who bravely finished not feeling well in 48th in another record field of 51 finishers.

In the U/15 boys race another big field of 61 Baxter Fletcher had his best run to finish 11th and with Adam Firsht 14th Harvey Grant 20th the team finished in 6th place and the B team of Archie Rowles 23rd, Joseph Luker 26th, Josh Pay 28th and George Taylor 47th finished in 7th place and were the 1st B team.

For the U/17 & U/20 women’s race held in conjunction with the senior women’s race Jemima Edwards was our sole u/17 in 70th and was the 19th u/17 and Amy Gamblin had her best run finishing 50th and was the 5th U20 in a total field of 123.

In the U/17 men’s race we had our second winner of the day when Tom Eames had an excellent run and was a clear winner and with Joe Clayson 12th, Max Brazier 13th they won the team race by one point. Again with back up from Sam Wilkinson 17th, Sam Kane 21st, Henry Taylor 26th they are looking good for the team title, however for all our teams there are still three more fixtures to go so the team places can easily change.Well done again to every one and to all the parents for your support.
