Despite a huge number of athletes dropping out at the very last minute, we managed another 3rd place and remain 11th in the league. We knew it was going to be a tough match as we were against two of the top four teams and so it was a relief that Crawley only turned up with four under 15 athletes. The overall standard was higher than our previous two matches, so it was great to have Laura and Natalie back from university, gaining valuable points in a number of events. Sarah and Anne were back in fine form in the throws, with Anne’s excellent shot put of 11.68 being the highlight of the match (although her equally fine pb in the triple jump caused a huge cheer too!). As we were so short of athletes, there were lots of opportunities to try new events, and I would like to thank Sarah for her strong powers of persuasion, encouraging Ellie in the long jump, and leading by example in the triple jump!

In the under 15 section, the eight athletes managed to cover all but the middle distance events between them, filling spaces to gain good points. Gabi was near her best in the long jump and covered the hurdles and high jump events very successfully at the last minute. Grace and Ellie both gained good points in the throws and Kerri-Ann performed well in tough sprint events. We were grateful to Grace for joining the relay team, literally at the last minute, where we beat the Crawley quartet in convincing style!

Thanks again to everyone who helped – Bob, Denise, Carol, Howard and Derek in particular – your support is invaluable. The next match is on 26 July in Guildford. The coach will leave at 10 o’clock.
