Kevin Rojas delivered a superb performance at the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday, finishing 9th British runner and 22nd overall in 2.22.56 – a PB by over 25 minutes. Kev’s time is reportedly the second fastest in Sussex this century (behind Jon Pepper) and equates to an average of 16.56 per 5k – equivalent to his own parkrun PB as recently as February 2011! Kevin handled the pressure better than many of the other top British runners on the day and delivered a result that truly reflected his times in races and training during the build up. Many congratulations to Kevin, who is now looking forward to another big step forward at the Berlin Marathon in September.
There was also a great performance from the club’s running doctor, Dimos Evangelidis, whose build up to London was littered with as many “nights on call” as it was training runs. Dimos was determined to make the start line in London (a race he had never done before) and loved every minute of at least the first 20 miles (!) before hanging on doggedly for 2.31.54 – a remarkable result from a very inspirational runner.
David Boyce was next home for the club in a fine 2.46.15, less than two minutes outside his PB, while Chris Mallinson completed his Brighton/London “sub 3 double” in eight days with a fantastic 2.54.35 to add to 2.57.30 the previous week. David Brett ran 3:13:34- his fastest time for a couple of years.
VM60 Ian Tomlinson came in at 4:20:04, VW50 Janice Farrar was in fine form with a time of 4:29:06, just in front of VM60 Barry Blackwell’s 4:29:39. Norah Carr finished in 5:07:32.
The combined results from Brighton and London make it already one of the best years for the club in terms of marathon results for a very long time. Congratulations to all of these sub 3 runners, as well as everyone else who achieved their own personal targets in both Brighton and London.
