World Record Holder shares racing tips at well attended Race Walking Masterclass – More Sessions Coming Soon

April 27, 2014

There was a strong turn-out for the race walking training led by coach Peter Selby at Withdean stadium last Friday. The session was aimed particularly at novices and the seventeen attendees covered a wide age range. Peter was especially pleased to see some children within the group, all-willing to try a new athletic discipline. It was also encouraging to see some non-club members.

Everyone enjoyed the various drills and explanations of rules and technique. The training was enhanced by the presence of O65 3K World Record Holder, Ian Richards, who race-walked in the 1980 Olympics, and Julie Drake, a former international and British record holder. They offered advice and demonstrated the style and speed of top level race walking. The evening finished with a 1000m time trial which left everyone breathing hard.

Peter will be offering further sessions in the coming months with new faces very welcome. Watch this space for dates.

There will also be the chance to compete in an open 1000m race at K2 this Thursday 1st May 2014. The 1K is scheduled for 8.30 PM. Age groups are from U13 to Vet and the race is free to encourage novices. See http://www.haywardsheathharriers.co.uk/hhhevents_128809.html
