New CRB Requirements – Now DBS

March 15, 2013

We have had the e-mail below from England Athletics about our requirements for CRB( now D&B) checking. The information they sent was, I think, more confusing than that on their website.

Could you please check on this site and make sure that you comply with their requirements.  We need to make sure we do go along with these requirements as a club and as individuals to protect ourselves if there should ever be any difficulties.

Dear All
Please note there have been some changes to the CRB system which has been replaced with the Disclosure Barring Service ( DBS ). The information below which is also on the following  England Athletics website link   Disclosure & Barring Service explains how the new system will operate

We know our clubs take their responsibilities with regards to welfare very seriously. And we are equally committed in our desire to give them the best possible support in this key area. Following the revision of the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) process we now have updated and simplified procedures for volunteers requiring the check. We hope these will benefit volunteers, clubs and the wider sport as we seek to help ensure we, as a sport, fulfill our responsibilities and offer the best possible environment for athletes and everyone involved in athletics.

UKA Welfare will issue DBS application forms in-house as opposed to directing volunteers to the DBS (formerly known as the CRB) call centre number.
The allocation of forms will follow the process shown below:

1. Disclosure Barring Service forms and guidance will be issued via the tutor on every coaching and officiating course from Friday 22nd February 2013.
2. Renewals for coaches and officials will continue to be sent out via UKA, therefore it is imperative that volunteers details are correct on the UKA database; we cannot stress this enough. You can check and update your details at www.englandathletics.org/editmyprofile.  If you have any problems with doing this then you should contact registration@englandathletics.org
3. Other applicants i.e. Team Managers, Welfare Officers etc, should be asked to email dbs@uka.org.uk to request a DBS application, providing your full name and postal address.

If an individual is not attending a course and does not meet the above criteria but feels they may still require a DBS check please direct them to a member of the welfare team on 0161 223 4246 and we will assess each volunteer on an individual basis.

Clubs are requested to ensure the application meets the requirement for the position applied for before making the application which at present would exclude positions such as parent helpers and club officials. It may be more relevant to complete a self disclosure form (available at www.britishathletics.org.uk/governance/policies/dbs) which is retained at club level.

A summary can be found at www.englandathletics.org/DBS and on this page you can also download a copy of the PDF guidance document that will be issued with all DBS application forms.
