October 5, 2017

After the glorious weather at the relays at Crystal Palace the week before, it was back to the wet and damp conditions at Goodwood for the annual relays, where we had 47 Brighton youngsters competing. There many excellent performances with two team win and two fastest laps. There were also two team silver medals a 3rd place team medal and one second and two 3rd fastest laps completing a great afternoon for the club.

In the U/13 Girls race Ruby Wilson 11.08, Mollie Barret 11.53 handed over to Eadie Yelling who took the team into second place just failing to catch the gold medal team by four seconds and her time 10.58 earned her the 3rd fastest lap. The B team of Sophie Packham 11.52, Tilly Wilburn 12.37 and Allanah Clayton 12.29 were the first B team in 7th place.

In the U/13 Boys race Will Matthews 10.21 like Ruby had an excellent first leg handing over Cosmo Derangi 11.12 who from 4th place set up Henry Yelling for a storming last leg to bring the team home in 2nd place and his time 9.50 earned him the fastest lap. The C team of Archie Turner 11.01 Joe Wilburn 12.35 and Freddie Hall 11.57 were in 17th place.

In the U/15 Girls race we had four teams teams and to show our great depth in this age group we had three teams in the 1st five with the D team finishing in 11th. This race provided probably the best finish ever in these relays after Ciara Muzio 10.50 in 4th, Rebecca Losh 10.45 moving up to 3rd, Lois Dooley took over around 20 seconds behind Hastings and as they approached the final bend Rebecca and the Hastings athlete were locked together and with a final sprint up the hill, Lois just got her nose in front by a mere second to win the team title. Lois’s time 10.26 earned her the 3rd fastest lap.

The C team of Lacey Fowler 10.54 Emily Muzio 10.58 and Jess Corbett 11.11 were not far behind the the bronze medallists in 4th, just ahead of our B team Tatum Walker 11.20, Alex Nann 11.02 and Ella Matthews 11.06 in 5th. In the D team Poppy Palmer Malins was delighted with her run in 10.58 and with Astrid Blackledge 12.23 Bertie Brooking 11.59 they finished in 11th Place.

In the U/15 Boys race we also had three teams and despite strong opposition our A team of Baxter Fletcher 9.50 Tom Roberts 10.26 and Patrick Connolly 9.51 were a very credible 5th and they were well backed up by the B team in 9th with Joseph Luker 10.06, Josh Pay 10.37 and Archie Rowles 10.16. Not far behind the C team of George Taylor 10.47, Harvey Grant in his first race for the club 10.15 and Oscar Davies 10.53 were 11th.

In the U/17 Women’s race over a longer course the team of Amber Wright, Flo Robinson who came in to team at the last minute and Niamh Halloren came home 3rd to gain the bronze medal to make it a 1-2-3 for our girls teams.

In the u/17 men’s race we had our 2nd team winners with Sam Wilkinson 13.23, Joe Clayson 13.29 and an excellent run by Tom Eames 12.34 which gained him the fastest lap. We also had a second team of Henry Taylor 14.22 Sam Kane 14.45 and a welcome return to Finn Halloren 14.35 who finished 6th.

It was a great day for the club. Thanks to all the support. We are looking strong in all are age groups for this coming winter and I am sure there will be more county medals to be won.

Reminder the first league meeting is 14th October back at Goodwood.
