Brighton & Hove City Athletic Club : Victory in the Southern Womens League Division 2, 2011

September 6, 2011

After the disappointment of the 2010 season it was even suggested by some that we drop out of the Southern Women’s league. This year has seen an incredible turn-around, with the team finishing at the top of our Division, over 150 points ahead of the other club teams.

Great team spirit and the achievement of top individual performances have meant that Brighton has now been invited to enter the UK Womens Athletics League (UKWL) qualifier in two weeks’ time.  B&HCAC has never had a team in the UKWL. Competing against 4 other teams in the qualifier, the top two teams will enter the UKWL.

We have also got through to the final of the Super 8 British Athletic League Cup, next weekend, a higher competition than the Plate final we won last year.

In this group of talented athletes we have a range of ages from U17’s to V50’s, most aged between 16 and 23. We have a great deal of potential for future years, especially with even more talented athletes coming up from the U15’s soon.

Altogether 28 athletes contributed to this season. The Brighton match had the biggest team with 18 athletes present.

Highest points scorers this season were Sarah Hewitt(V35 throws) with 71 points, Melissa Donaldson(U17 jumps) with 65.5 points and Ellie Woolcott with 58 points(U17 throws). Although we suffered with several injuries and athletes away on holidays and competing for English Schools, Uk schools games, Southern England Championships, the rest of the team pulled together to show our competitors what real team spirit was!
