The 91st anniversary Brighton and Hove AC “Chris Carter” Boxing Day Races took place in mild conditions after the dampness of Christmas Day. The races, newly named after our club legend Chris Carter, were started by the man himself. Chris, who celebrated his 81st birthday on Christmas Day, first ran this event in 1958. He went on to compete twice in the Olympics over 800 metres.
A stalwart of our club for many years, Chris and his wife Elaine organised these races before passing the torch to Sam Lambourne. Since 2022, Paula Blackledge, Judith Carder, and Melanie Anning have taken charge.
The start of this year’s race was slightly delayed due to Covid, which reduced the team of on-the-day organisers to one. However, no one seemed to mind as the festive spirit prevailed.
Congratulations to Louis Taub (B&H) for winning the men’s 4-lap running race and to Amelia Culshaw (PHX) for the same feat in the women’s. In the race walk, first back was Mike George (Hove Hornets), followed by David Kemp (A80) and Joan Lennon (Steyning AC). But everyone was a winner for turning out on Boxing Day.
Chris chose to raise funds for Amaze, a Brighton-based charity supporting the families of children and young people with disabilities. After counting the pennies, the final sum stands at £750, which is truly “amazing.” Thank you to all participants for your generosity.
Finally, our thanks to the many volunteers who made this happen. There are too many to name, but we appreciate your support and hope you enjoyed it.
